San Carlo lies at the far end of the narrow Val Bavona, marking the end of the road. Here is the lower terminus of the cableway to Robièi, situated at the foot of the Basòdino Glacier.
The valley is characterised by its glacially-formed U-shape and high rock faces. Landslides have carpeted the valley floor with detritic cones and boulders as large as houses, which have defined the river bed and give the valley its primeval appearance. With few exceptions, the Val Bavona is not inhabited all the year round. In the summer months, it comes to life and is very popular with hikers.
