Trg kralja Petra Svačića, 44324, Jasenovac, Croatia

"THE DEAD OPEN THE EYES OF THE LIVING" is what the monument in the center of the village says in big letters. Start at the sculpture of mother with child, leave the village... The embankment will lead you to the confluence of rivers Una and Sava - nowadays a European border, hard to cross for those born in unlucky places. Back on the embankment, reach the Jasenovac Memorial in a straight line.
We are in a historically troubled, multi ethnic region. Look carefully... You may notice some abandoned, destroyed houses, some façades strangely damaged - marks of the war as SFR Yugoslavia was breaking apart in early 1990es. Half a century after memorialized atrocities, hostilities resurficed.
Across the river you can see Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over there is another memorial to atrocities in WWII, the details of which, believe me, you do not want to know.
The border on these rivers, across time:
Before WWI: Austria-Hungary, no border
After WWI: Kingdom of Yugoslavia, no border
During WWII: Independent State of Croatia, no border, fascist horror
After WWII: Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, no border
Before WWIII (I am afraid): European Union / Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina
