Berlin Tempelhof Airport

The airfield, which opened in 1923, was built by the Nazis in 1936-1941 with what was then the largest building in Europe: Tempelhof Airport.
At the end of World War II in 1945, the victorious powers USA, USSR, England and France divided the city of Berlin into four zones of occupation. Tempelhof became the central airport for the Americans.
From 1948 to 1949 the USSR closed all roads to West Berlin. During this Berlin blockade, the Western Allies supplied the isolated residents of Berlin by plane via the so-called airlift. The airlift, to which many Berliners owe their lives, was initiated by US military governor Lucius D. Clay.
After the reunification of Germany in 1989, the US Air Force returned the airport to the city of Berlin in 1993.
In 2008, flight operations at Tempelhof Airport were finally ceased. The “Tempelhof Airport” became the “Tempelhofer Feld” park.

Berliner Flughafen Tempelhof

Das 1923 eröffnete Flugfeld wurde 1936-1941 von den Nazis mit dem damals größten Gebäude Europas bebaut: dem Flughafen Tempelhof.
Mit Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs 1945 teilten die Siegermächte USA, UdSSR, England und Frankreich die Stadt Berlin in vier Besatzungszonen auf. Tempelhof wurde zentraler Flughafen der US-Amerikaner.
Von 1948 bis 1949 sperrte die UdSSR alle Straßen nach West-Berlin. Während dieser Berlin-Blockade versorgten die Westalliierten die isolierten Bewohner Berlins per Flugzeug über die sog. Luftbrücke. Initiiert wurde die Luftbrücke, der viele Berlinern ihr Leben verdanken, von US-Militärgouverneur Lucius D. Clay.
Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands 1989 gab die US Air Force 1993 den Flughafen zurück an die Stadt Berlin.
2008 wurde der Flugbetrieb am Flughafen Tempelhof endgültig eingestellt. Aus dem „Flughafen Tempelhof“ wurde der Park „Tempelhofer Feld“.
