The Gold Country (also known as Mother Lode Country) is a historic region in the northern portion of the U.S. State of California, that is primarily on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. It is famed for the mineral deposits and gold mines that attracted waves of immigrants, known as the 49ers, during the 1849 California Gold Rush. When gold was first discovered in 1848 many people came from all over the world to find gold. There were 500 mining camps which 300 are still unfound as of today. There was 400 million dollars in gold mined between 1849 and 1855. This was arguably the largest migration of the human race in such a short time. While most of these prospectors failed in their efforts to gain riches (the ones who made the money were the shopkeepers), their legacy remains in the many towns that now cluster amongst the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. https://www.google.com/books/edition/_/QKBh_CIbMLQC?hl=en
