An early morning ride to a small settlement called French Pass. French Pass, known in Māori as Te Aumiti, received its European name from the French explorer Admiral Jules Dumont d’Urville. He navigated the pass during his second voyage to New Zealand in 1827 aboard the French Navy corvette Astrolabe. The pass is a narrow and treacherous stretch of water that separates D’Urville Island from the mainland coast of the South Island of New Zealand
