Ride from Penn Valley to Grass Valley, through The Great Republic of Rough and Ready.
In April of 1850, to avoid taxation, the town decided to secede from the Union and to become it's own independant republic. That only lasted for about 3 months, since they were denied joining the July 4th celebration, they rejoined just in time to be part of the festivities and be allowed to purchase alcohol. The story is well documented and probably mixed with some legends, who knows. Nowadays the little town still has a sign proudly announcing "The Great Republic of Rough and Ready".
