The Frontroute cycling trail between Keiem and Diksmuide offers a poignant journey through the World War I Western Front. Starting near Keiem, the route soon leads you towards Oud-Stuivekenskerke, where the preserved church tower served as a crucial observation post during the war. Continuing along the path, you'll reach the chilling Dodengang (Trench of Death), a preserved network of Belgian trenches right on the banks of the Ijzer (Yser) River. This stark reminder of the brutal trench warfare offers a powerful and moving experience. The route follows the course of the Ijzer, the river that played a vital role in halting the German advance.
