Description
The North Holland Dunes is a large protected area in the Netherlands that serves as an important source of drinking water for surrounding communities. The region sits atop an extensive sand layer that filters rainwater as it percolates down into the soil, ultimately replenishing the local groundwater aquifers. To preserve the quality of this valuable resource, the Dutch government designated the area as a grondwater protection area, or groundwater protection area, which imposes strict regulations on human activities in the region. Restrictions on land use, building and construction, waste management, and agriculture help to ensure the continued health and safety of the groundwater in the North Holland Dunes, while also protecting the unique natural habitats that make this area of the Netherlands so special.
