During the time of Tsar Simeon the Great (864 - 927), the Bulgarian state reached its greatest military and political prosperity. Tsar Simeon, however, remains in the memory of the Bulgarians not only as a skilled general and diplomat, but also as the inspirer of remarkable cultural achievements. A prominent place among them is occupied by the capital of the Bulgarian state - Great Preslav. A city that, in the plans of the Bulgarian ruler, gives the most vivid expression of his political and cultural ambitions. In his new capital, King Simeon continued the work of St. Tsar Boris I for building and strengthening the Christian culture in the Bulgarian lands. Along with this, the Bulgarian ruler embodied his own aspirations - to build a capital that would rival Constantinople in terms of splendor and magnificence.
