Marken
Marken is a fomer Island in the Markermeer located northeast of Amsterdam.
It is known for its characteristic wooden houses and traditional costumes.
It was separated from the mainland in the 13th century during the formation of the Zuiderzee.
Since 1957 it has been connected to the mainland by a causeway.
Before the Zuiderzee was made into the IJsselmeer, the inhabitants of this island made their living from fishing, especially for eels.
