Description
De Voie Verte ligt aan de oude spoorlijn Alès via Nmes naar Beaucaire. Van het midden van de 19e tot het midden van de 20e eeuw was Alès het centrum van de kolenwinning in de Gard, die begon te bloeien na de aanleg van deze spoorlijn. Pas in 1958 nam de steenkoolproductie weer sterk af. In 1995 werd de laatste mijnsite gesloten. (Bron: Wikipedia) Op de oude spoorlijn is nu een prachtig fietspad aangelegd tussen Beaucaire en Pont du Gard. Door de goede infrastructuur, met weinig knooppunten en met snel asfalt en rustplaatsen, kunnen fietsers snel van Beaucaire naar het Romeinse aquaduct in Pont Du Gard rijden.
