Description
The Kozakkenput used to belong to the Beek en Royen country house. Long straight lanes and forest were laid out at this house from 1730. One of those lanes was the Laantje zonder Eind. Major General A.F.L. Viesse de Marmont was stationed in the city of Utrecht with his French-Batavian troops in the early 1800s. In 1804 he held exercises on the heathland around Zeist with his 20,758 soldiers. He had his camp set up on the heath and in order to have enough water for his men and horses he had 30 wells dug ten meters deep to reach the groundwater. With the groundwork De Marmont kept his men in good condition. The Pyramid of Austerlitz was also built by De Marmont's men. Not only to stay in shape, but also to kill time.
