Not long after comrade Tito had died, there were few years in the mid 1980s in which the island has opened to public. At that time a B-category hotel room on Brijuni was affordable for "ordinary people". In that period (in which the island seems to have been in a somewhat better shape then it is now) I spent a week there in two summers. The first visit prompted me to learn to ride a horse. On my second visit it was a pure joy - back then one could rent a horse there. Depending on the transportation means used, one "discovers" different things. Your tour is more of a "basic" kind I would say, based on my experience. The history of the island, from Roman times onwards is a complex, interesting and partly sad one: K&K Monarchy, Austrian family Kupelwieser, water problem, malaria, Robert Koch, topmost high society tourism, WW I, Italy, WW II, Socialist Yugoslavia, presidential summer residence, the Nonalignment movement founding fathers, film celebrities, Croatia. I am happy to have been able to walk the known paths again in this virtual way, after so many years. Thank you!

Danke Bitte weiter so
