Thônes is located halfway between the shores of Lake Annecy and the ski stations of the Aravi chain. A similar ascent goes to St-Jean-de-Sixt. From there it is still a bit of descending and climbing to Le Grand Bornand, the start of, among other things, the col de la Colombière.
