Description

This is the approach part of the "Knight's Climb" ("Rittersteig" in German) - a mostly forest track connecting the two Austrian villages: Kammern im Liesingtal and Mautern. Actually, it is a concealed forest path, high above the river valley, connecting two mountain castle ruins - "Burgruine Kammerstein" (12th century; altitude: ~995m) and "Burg Ehrenfels" (13th century; altitude: ~1150m).

On a beautiful, warm, sunny winter day, start in Kammern and reach the first castle in a steady, quite hard uphill. Start in a "civilized environment", among picturesque town houses, visit a living museum of native old fruit tree sorts, follow the road into the forest. The final approach to the castle, after a few snow intervals, is somewhat spooky - the middle ages come to one's mind. Under a sudden very strong and cold wind, having slippery snow all around, it is not possible to enter the ruin. The entrance is difficult and risky even under the ideal summer conditions, but... "I'll be back!" 😁 [Recorded on 2023-02-21]

And I was back! The second episode is here: "Knight's Climb 🚶 2 Castles".

In 2023 I visited many very special places - by foot, by bike and by kayak. Look at my archive...
