Description
The Clingse Bossen are a beautiful and extensive woodland area situated in the border region between Belgium and the Netherlands, near the town of Hulst. These forests offer diverse landscapes, including walking and cycling paths that wind through both deciduous and coniferous trees, providing a peaceful retreat into nature. Historically, the Clingse Bossen area was significantly impacted by the "Dodendraad" (Wire of Death) during World War I. This electrified barbed wire fence was erected by the German occupying forces to seal off the border between occupied Belgium and neutral Netherlands. It tragically resulted in numerous civilian deaths. Today, remnants and information panels within and around the Clingse Bossen serve as poignant reminders of this dark period in history, offering a somber yet important historical context to the natural beauty of the area.
