A few years ago there was still a fairytale forest here with tall spruce trees.Deeply snow-covered, column-high spruce forests - in Thuringia, this winter experience may soon be just a memory. Because the most common and landscape-defining tree species has fallen victim to bark beetles on a large scale. The result is bare slopes and thinned forests in many places. Not even one in five trees in the Free State is still healthy. Reforestation with other tree species will change the face of Thuringia. But the spruce is disappearing.
