Leaving Zonnebeke, you traverse an evolving natural environment, where agricultural fields now cover the former battlefields, yet subtle undulations hint at buried trenches. Numerous war memorials and small, evocative cemeteries dot the route, silent witnesses to the fierce fighting. The path then leads to Zillebeke, a village almost entirely obliterated during the war, now a tranquil settlement. Here, the Zillebeke Lake offers a peaceful expanse of water, though it was once a strategic objective. Further on, the route approaches Ypres (Ieper), a city famously rebuilt from its ashes. Beyond its magnificent Cloth Hall and Grote Markt, Ypres is home to the Menin Gate, where the Last Post Ceremony continues nightly, a powerful and enduring tribute to the fallen. The journey offers a profound connection to both the natural recovery and the enduring human spirit.
