The Buntven is located in the Zandbosch near Deurne and is approximately 8 hectares in size. It was created during the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago, as a cut-off bend of the Bakelse Aa. Originally it was a nutrient-poor fen with rare plants. Due to human influences such as nitrogen deposition and desiccation, the fen is becoming more nutrient-rich, causing unwanted plants to advance and vulnerable species, amphibians and dragonflies to be threatened.
