In the northern part of Istria-Croatia lies the most famous Istrian medieval town of Motovun. This captivating hilltop town is one of the characteristic symbols of the Istrian interior.
In ancient times, both Celts and Illyrians built their fortresses at the location of present-day Motovun. The name of the village is also of Celtic origin, derived from Montona, meaning "a town in the hills".
It is the birthplace of Mario Andretti (1940), famous auto racing champion, world champion of Formula 1 (1978) and the winner of the ''500 miles of Indianapolis'' race (1969).
